Alex Mercado Receives a Degree from University of the Sciences

Alex Julian Orlando Mercado of Tobyhanna, PA (18466) graduated from University of the Sciences during a ceremony on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, as part of the University's 191st Commencement celebration in Philadelphia, Pa.

Mercado graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science in biology degree . He is the son of Hector (dad) and Eileen (mom) Mercado. Mercado was a member of the Alpha Chi scholarship society. He was an American Medical Student Association volunteer coordinator, member of the Timmy Foundation, a Career Services Devil's Advocate Mentor, SGA Senator, Pre-Med Society member, research assistant for Dr. Bela Peethambaran: investigating the role of 14-3-3 proteins in the flavonoid biosynthesis of Arabidopsis Thalina and their effect on drought stress, and Emergency Department and General Medicine Unit Aid at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Mercado received the Marin S. Dunn Memorial Prize for Biology.
