Bryn Mawr Resident Honored with University of the Sciences' Faculty Award of Merit

Philadelphia, PA (03/09/2020) — University of the Sciences presented the 2020 Faculty Award of Merit to Anil D'Mello, PhD, during its Founders' Day ceremony on Feb. 13, 2020. The award honors an outstanding faculty member who "exemplifies the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit of USciences' founders, and who has engaged in research or some form of scholarly pursuit that results in the development or discovery of something new."

Dr. D'Mello, professor and director of the pharmaceutical sciences program, was honored for his work to develop a unique approach and novel treatment of phenylketonuria, an inherited metabolic disorder that appears at birth and impacts one out of every 12,000 infants.

He recently received a National Institutes of Health Small Business Technology Transfer award to further develop his proposed approach to the treatment of this condition using a microencapsulated enzyme, which may also serve as a platform for potential treatments of other diseases resulting from metabolic disorders. Dr. D'Mello, who been a professor at USciences for more than 30 years, was awarded a patent for this work and the technology has been licensed to a startup company, Abri Science.

Dr. D'Mello earned his PhD in pharmacokinetics from the University of Pittsburgh as well as a bachelor's in pharmacy from University of Bombay. He teaches pharmacokinetics and is the previous recipient of the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching and was named the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Outstanding Teacher of the Year.

Dr. D'Mello, originally from Bombay, India, currently resides in Bryn Mawr with his family, and enjoys tennis and playing his clarinet.

Each year, Founders' Day at USciences recognizes its establishment on Feb. 23, 1821, as Philadelphia College of Pharmacy-the first college of pharmacy in North America, which is now a part of USciences.
