Westmont, N.J. Resident Dr. Michelle Kanther Named Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences

Philadelphia, PA (10/27/2017) — Michelle Kanther, PhD, has been named assistant professor of biological sciences at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. She comes to USciences with experience researching the interactions between microbe and the immune system.

Dr. Kanther was previously a lecturer at Bryn Mawr College. At USciences, Dr. Kanther will be teaching immunology and biology.

Dr. Kanther's research interests have focused on the interactions between the microbes in the gut and the innate immune system. Mounting evidence has shown that the microorganisms found residing on our epithelial surfaces, and particularly in our gut, contribute to important biological functions including maturation of the immune system. To examine the role of the commensal microbiota, she utilized a zebrafish model system in which fish could be reared in the presence or absence of commensal microbes.

Dr. Kanther, a Westmont, N.J. resident, received her bachelor's degree in biology at Dickinson College and her doctorate degree in genetics and molecular biology at The University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
