Usciences Honors Haddonfield Resident with the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching

Philadelphia, PA (06/06/2017) — University of the Sciences in Philadelphia presented the 2017 Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching to Christine Flanagan, associate professor of English, on May 24, 2017, at its 196th commencement ceremony.

The Lindback Award, which is funded through a gift from the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation, is given annually to a faculty member recognized by the students as the most outstanding instructor at the University.

Provost Dr. Peter Miller, who presented Flanagan with the award, said Dr. Flanagan's nomination by the students is a tribute to her professionalism, knowledge, enthusiasm and teaching skills as well as to the mutual respect that exists between her and the students.

"Christine's students appreciate both her passion for the course content and her challenging expectations," said Dr. Miller. "As one student puts it, 'she possesses an exceptional ability to convey her enthusiasm and love of the material through innovative and resourceful teaching methods that create an inviting learning environment, engage students and encourage their active participation.'"

Flanagan said for her the joy of teaching comes in encouraging students to explore their creativity even if the students don't think of themselves as innately creative types. She said she sees that USciences students are among the most creative she has met.

Flanagan received her bachelor's degree in English from the University of Rochester and her masters of fine arts in creative writing from Emerson College. In addition to developing travel-based coursework in the humanities and minor in creative writing at USciences, Flanagan is faculty for the University Honors Program, faculty advisor of the USciences literary journal "The Elixir," and coordinator of the Misher Festival of Fine Arts and Humanities.

Originally from Haddonfield, N.J., Flanagan currently resides Barrington, N.J., with her family.
